Chabad of S.R.C. Smile on SeniorsTouch a Life. Change the World!

Our Mission & Vision:

Our mission is to bring joy to the life of seniors in Renssealer County. Volunteers are carefully matched to their seniors in order to provide companionship and much-needed assistance. The meaningful                                                               inter-generational bonds that are formed enrich the lives of both, volunteers and seniors.

It takes just minutes to change a person’s entire week.

It has been proven time and time again that consistent human interactions can greatly impact the quality of life of the aged, and those who interact with seniors are in the position to accomplish a tremendous amount. Many of us have parents or family who are seniors, living alone or in senior facilities, that would greatly benefit from an extra visit from someone who isn’t family. Family can not always visit as often as desired, and not always is there someone else to supplement those visits. And that’s where Smile On Seniors steps in. Our coordinators match local volunteers with seniors for a weekly visit, bringing joy and a sense of caring to many. With your help, we hope to match a volunteer with every Jewish senior!

How does Smile on Seniors work?

1. Volunteers fill out a registration form.

2. Prior to initial senior visitation, volunteers are required to participate in a brief orientation session with a volunteer coordinator. Orientations can be arranged for individuals or small groups. These sessions will ensure that volunteers will be prepared to have a successful initial encounter with their senior.

3. Coordinators will carefully match the volunteer to a senior with common interests. They will explain the needs of the senior and introduce the volunteer to the senior at the first visit. SOS coordinators help to schedule weekly visits.

4. SOS will prepare holiday packages for volunteers to deliver to their senior buddies several times each year.

Consistency
Volunteers are encouraged to be consistent with their weekly visits. Anticipating future visits with an SOS volunteer can help seniors maintain a more positive outlook, but if the volunteer does not show up, seniors are very disappointed.

Bringing Your Children
Bringing your children along on a visit is beneficial for both the seniors and the children. The seniors love the young company, and the relationship with the seniors has a positive effect on your family.

Don't be concerned about the commotion that always accompanies kids. It can be a welcome change to the usually sedate home environment, and studies show that elderly people enjoy seeing and spending time with children.
