September 2008:

Wow! Another year has come and gone and we want you to know that we are thinking of you and sending you our warmest New Year wishes. On behalf of our family, we would like to wish you and your loved ones a sweet and wonderful, happy New Year!

The following is an update of some programs under Greenbush Chabad:

Growing Chabad of S. Rensselaer County:
We are glad to have the opportunity to meet more Jewish residents of Greenbush and Rensselaer. We saw new faces at Holiday events, Educational Programs and at the Jewish Women's Circle and we hope to see the Jewish community grow. This is one of the themes of Rosh Hashanah- to reflect on the gift of life. As G-D generously grants us more years, and good health, we strive to commit ourselves to growing spiritually by performing more Mitzvos and refining ourselves.

S.O.S: Smile On Seniors
On Friday, September 19th, Chabad led a Rosh Hashanah awareness for Seniors at the Eddy Daybreak in North Greenbush. This Senior Day care lets family members drop off their elderly family member and then pick them up in the late afternoon. Residents, many non-Jewish, had the opportunity to learn about Rosh Hashanah traditions.  Rabbi Laber also explained why we use honey in Rosh Hoshanah foods and residents held some fresh honey comb.

Rosh Hashanah Holiday packages were prepared by volunteers from Maimonides Hebrew Day School of Albany and BMC's newly formed TLC: Teen Lamplighter's Club. The packages, consisting of a home-baked round Challah, homemade honey cookies, an apple, and a Rosh Hhashana decoration. More than 50 packages were brought to Seniors at Ohav Shalom apartments and some private homes. Many Jewish residents were so excited to be greeted by young smiling volunteers who eagerly handed them the packages. One resident at Ohav Shalom smiled and asked "Is this "Mishloach Manos"?  If you know of a Jewish senior who would appreciate future Holiday packages or visitors, please let us know. If you would like to be an S.O.S. volunteer, please contact us and we will match you up with a Bubby or Zaidy Buddy.

Bat Mitzvah Club:  A Great "BEE"-GINNING!
The Bat Mitzvah Club for girls in grades 5-6 had its first event and orientation at the Labers and discovered "What the Buzz is all about?"
Members along with moms watched with fascination as Rabbi Laber opened his beehive. The girls also took turns spinning the honey extractor. Members and moms shared what Bat Mitzvah means to them and how the hardworking bees teach us to prepare for the future and strive to be a true Bat Mitzvah!

Chabad Hebrew School:
On Sept. 21, we had our first lesson. Students spoke about their goals for this new year 5769. Some goals included to gain Hebrew language skills, reading fluency, knowledge of Torah, understand meaning of mitzvot and to prepare for Bat Mitzvah. We wrote a Rosh Hashanah shopping list and learned key Rosh Hashana Hebrew words

JEWISH GIRLS RETREAT: WINTER
After a successful three week Summer Retreat Thank G-d, in August for 50 campers and 25 staff members, we are already looking forward to seeing our camp family and hopefully new faces at our winter retreat from Dec. 25-28 2008.

We hope to see you soon. If you would like to arrange for a lunch 'n Learn at your office or to learn with the Rabbi or Nechama, don't hesitate to contact us.

If you can be a sponsor or would like to contribute towards any of our programs, you will become part of our mission to Build Community, Illuminate Lives and Empower Youth!
